Total Solar Eclipse Coming to North America in 2024

When and Where to See the Eclipse

On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will be visible from parts of North America. The eclipse will begin in Mexico at 10:51 am MST and will move across the United States, ending in Canada at 2:56 pm EST.

The path of totality, where the moon will completely block the sun, will be about 170 miles wide. The eclipse will be visible from parts of Mexico, the United States, and Canada.

The best places to view the eclipse will be in areas with clear skies and low humidity. Some of the best viewing locations include:

  • Mazatlán, Mexico
  • Guadalajara, Mexico
  • San Antonio, Texas
  • Dallas, Texas
  • Nashville, Tennessee
  • Indianapolis, Indiana
  • Cleveland, Ohio
  • Toronto, Canada

How to View the Eclipse Safely

It is important to view the eclipse safely. Never look directly at the sun without proper eye protection. Solar eclipses can cause permanent eye damage.

To view the eclipse safely, use solar eclipse glasses or a solar eclipse viewer. These devices can be purchased online or at most science museums.

If you do not have solar eclipse glasses or a solar eclipse viewer, you can still enjoy the eclipse by projecting it onto a piece of paper or cardboard.

To project the eclipse, poke a small hole in a piece of paper or cardboard. Hold the paper or cardboard up to the sun, and the eclipse will be projected onto the ground.
