Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Recalled Eggs from Wisconsin Farm

State health officials urge consumers to discard eggs produced by Hilltop Farms

Investigation underway to determine the source of the outbreak

A salmonella outbreak has been linked to recalled eggs from Hilltop Farms in Wisconsin, the state Department of Health Services announced Friday. The eggs were sold at retail stores in Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan.

The department is urging consumers to discard any eggs from Hilltop Farms with a Julian date code of 235 through 263. The affected eggs are packaged in clear plastic cartons with "Hilltop Farms" printed on the top and "Best if used by" dates from Sept. 13, 2023, through Oct. 11, 2023.

Symptoms of salmonella infection include diarrhea, vomiting, fever, and abdominal cramps. The illness usually lasts for several days and most people recover without treatment. However, in some cases, salmonella infection can cause serious illness and even death.

The department is investigating the source of the outbreak and has collected samples from the farm for testing. The investigation is ongoing.

Consumers who have any of the recalled eggs should discard them immediately and wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water. They should also clean and disinfect any surfaces that may have come into contact with the eggs.
